WELCOME

Greetings and welcome to the official blog for SKATE MOZ, formally known as Associação do skate de Moçambique (ASM).

WHO ARE WE?

Isard Pindula and Ruben Vilanculos of Maputo and Matola, respectively, are the cofounders and primary organizers of ASM.

Founded in 2006 as Projecto Radical, ASM was formed by group of street sports enthusiasts in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo in order to help to provide space for Maputo's young people to express their passion for street sports such as skateboarding, longboarding, rollerblading, and BMX. In addition to promoting street sports, Projecto Radical hoped to provide Mozambican youth with a sense of purpose and direction in their personal and professional lives.

OUR HISTORY

Soon after its founding in 2006, Projecto Radical drew attention from people all over Mozambique and the world. This is because we were one of the only communities promoting street sports, which at the time was quite unusual considering the relatively small market and limited mainstream support for such sports in a developing country like Mozambique.

In 2008, we officially became the Extreme Sports Association of Maputo City. We primarily focused on promoting skateboarding, BMX and rollerblading in the Mozambican capital.

As time passed and community participation increased, the number of riders from each sport grew. At the same time, we were seeking partnership with different international sporting bodies such as ISF - INTERNATIONAL SKATEBOARDING FEDERATION and UCI - UNION CYCLISTE INTERNATIONALE because unlike these organizations which dealt with only one modality, we sought to include all extreme urban sports.

After some years of reflection and restructuring, we decided to start over and create two distinct institutions: the Skateboarding Association of Mozambique (ASM) and the Cycling Association of Maputo. In 2012, ASM graduated to the status of NGO and was officially recognized by the Mozambican government.

The official government document (written in Portuguese) that marked a new beginning for ASM.

FUTURE PROJECTS

We are very excited to share the news of our formalized status with you! This means that we have the government's support for our activism around urban sports and youth empowerment.

Some of our future projects include one social project focused on youth development, one focused on constructing Mozambique's first skatepark, one focused on training and formation. We'd like to thank the Brazillian Skateboarding Confederation, one of our community partners, for sending us documents and resources that will enable us to better train judges, manage resources, and plan activities.
